The Foundry is home to many high level instructors who have a passion for teaching Bjj. The ability to break down Jiu Jitsu knowledge and deliver it in a way that anyone can understand is a rare skill. The resident Black Belt, has been training in BJJ since 1998. Jon earned his blue belt at the Gracie Academy while in California and became a student of Aaron Blake and Joe Moreira upon returning to Maine. Jon received his black belt from Joe Moreira in 2008. Jon has competed in sport Jiu-Jitsu at the local and national level. Jon takes on the "old school" role at the club in making sure that students keep their basics solid and refined.

Noel is a Black Belt under 3rd Degree Alliance Black Belt and World Masters champion Takeyoshi Ikehara. With over 25 years of Martial Arts training, Noel has amassed a broad and extensive understanding of self-defense, its many benefits, and how to create a fun and responsive learning environment.


Noel has trained and competed all over the country and in Brazil and has won or placed in many competitions. He has medalled numerous times (7x competitor) at the Pan American Jiu Jitsu Championships in both Gi and No-Gi. At the age of 38, Noel fought in the Mundial 2008 (World Championships of BJJ), losing on points to the eventual World silver medallist, almost submitting his opponent in the final seconds.


Noel is known for his articulate and thorough teaching style and believes that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for anyone, regardless of age, gender, size or level of athleticism.

Shawn Smith started training with Jon Lamarche and Noelie Danforth in September 2003 and today is one of only five IBJJF-Certified Black Belts in the state of Maine.

Shawn is one of the most active competitors in New England, with nearly 220 matches under his belt and medals from more than 50 tournaments. He is a 10x NAGA Expert Champion, 4x Maine Skirmish Lightweight Champion, and has a total of 39 1st place finishes. Shawn has also won 10 NAGA silver medals and a 2 bronzes at Grappler’s Quest in the advanced divisions and was Nationally Ranked #2 by NAGA for ages 30-39 in 2010.

He teaches over twenty young martial artists at The Foundry Kids program in Rangeley, which he owns and runs, and is the tournament director of “The Black Fly” Kids Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships.

Bri is a Black Belt with over 10 years experience training in BJJ. This experience shows in her relentless style on the mat, and eagerness to give the art she loves back to her students. Bri owns and runs the Farmington Foundry.  She continues to embrace the BJJ culture on and off the mats, and most enjoys the wonderful people  it has brought into her life. Bri has competed locally and at the national level, and has recently begun her journey in MMA having her first fight in November of 2016. Overall Bri's training style and club camaraderie continues to remind us that training is about having fun with your team and friends.



Jay Gaulard began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2008 and has enjoyed every single minute of it. He initially started in Connecticut and then continued on in Florida and now trains full time in Farmington, Maine. In 2015, Jay was awarded his brown belt and was offered the opportinuty to instruct other students. Because he truly loves the art and enjoys watching classmates progress, he jumped at the opportunity.

Jay's strong suit is his guard game, where he fights from his back to subdue and control his opponents. He teaches all aspects of Jiu-Jitsu, but aims to make students feel comfortable with the basics. He focuses on simplicity and understanding and tries to pass on his love of the sport.




Josh began training at The Foundry BJJ in 2010 with the intentions of getting in better shape.  He has now reached the milestone of Purple Belt, and has competed in many competitions in and out of state.  Josh is proof that BJJ can actively change your level of physical fitness, and regular practice supports a healthy lifestyle.  He very much enjoys sharing his experience with BJJ, and the benefits he has received from it with his students.

Josh has a very creative BJJ game.  Josh has been instructing for two years now, and has a calm demeanor that helps other learn from the techniques he is teaching. 




Mike began his BJJ jouney with The Foundry in January of 2013.  He has competed in a number of NAGA and local tournaments as a White Belt and a Blue Belt.  Mike also holds his Green Belt in Judo, and very much enjoys sharing his Judo techniques with the other students in class. 

Mike has been married to his wife, Jocelyn (Foundry White Belt), for 20 years, and the enjoy the art of BJJ together.  They also have two wonderful daughters, Zoe and Annabelle (also a Foundry White Belt).  Mike teaches one Sunday a month, and also assists with multiple classes that Bri teaches.
