Train only to Train

Everything we DO requires effort. Some things require more effort than others. I see training as a number of things such as moving meditiation, exercise, self defense, peer interaction, etc.

I train just to train. And I enjoy the effort just as much as the reward!

Do I have goals? Yes. I want to get better. I believe that every time I step on the mat and put forth the required effort-I get better. However, I don't necessarily see that in my day-to-day results.

We live in an age of immediate gratification. People are almost conditioned to expect "progress" as something they can touch, something they can see when they do most anything.

And what happens when the results are no longer so immediate, so noticeable? The individual often gets bored and moves on to the next "new" thing. ...and the cycle continues.

I have seen it with my kids and students, time and time again.

For example, I run 5 miles each day (I don't really. haha). I would love to see my time get better and better after each workout. Unfortunately, that doesnt always happen. I have to accept that I am doing this for more than immediate results. I am doing it for the sake of doing it. Today, I may have a slower time than yesterday. But, I keep plugging along because I have conditioned myself to enjoy the journey.

The same goes for Jiu Jitsu. We all need to train for the sake of training. Sure, it's important to set several short term goals. These short term goals all lead to a long term goal. This Long Term goal can be earning a new belt, winning a grappling competition, or just "hanging" (or besting) with someone that has historically made you his/her personal nail to hammer on.

Remember to Train Just to Train. The results will come in time. Enjoy the ride as the journey is just as important as the destination.

Very well written, Noel! I agree with everything you have said here. There are definitely times when i step on the mats and slay people, but the next day I am the one getting slayed. . . No worries. I take that whooping and discover new ways to avoid it next time, journeying through the jungle of jiu jitsu until i flow like the river that runs through it. Win or lose we are all gaining ground, pushing on, and and reaching the ultimate goal of forward progress.

Very true and well said... This is what makes Jiu Jitsu a lifestyle. Over the years I have found that the journey has become MORE important than the destination.
